POLICE ARREST KILLERS OF HAUSAS BUT NO ARREST MADE OF FULANIS KILLING IN EDO STATE

No fewer than five persons have been killed in Asaba, the Delta State capital, when unknown gunmen, on Friday, attacked a Hausa settlement near the popular Abraka Market.

SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that the attack took place at about 9:40pm, with scores of persons sustaining injuries.

The killings have sparked tension in the state capital.

Two leaders of the Hausa community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said their members could identify the hoodlums.

The sources claimed that three men, a woman, and teenager were killed during the attack.

It was learnt that security operatives comprising the police, Department of State Services and soldiers have been deployed in the area to avert a reprisal.

The police, on Saturday, said two suspects, believed to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, had been arrested  in connection to the killings.

A statement by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, noted that the attackers were a three-man gang.

Aniamaka said the leader of the gang was at large following the arrest of the two suspects.

While commiserating with the families of the deceased, the police spokesperson disclosed that five persons sustained injuries, adding that they were receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba.

“The Delta Police Command in the early hours of Saturday arrested two suspects namely: Abraham Ndudi, 24, from Kwale, Delta State; and Okereke Ifeanyi, 21, from Ogbaru in Anambra State for their involvement in the dastardly shooting and killing of four persons at Abraka Market, Asaba.

“The suspects, who were arrested from their hiding places, are already helping the police in their investigation. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to arrest the third suspect, whose real name is yet unknown but simply identified as ‘Last Burial’.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim, in the statement, called for calm, assuring residents of the state that adequate security measures had been put in place to ensure the security of lives and property.

REMINDER
Fulani herdsmen reportedly shot dead a farmer identified as Efosa Omoregie in Oben community, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State.

It was gathered that the deceased and youths in the area had attempted to prevent some cows sighted on their farms from eating their crops when the suspected herdsmen allegedly opened fire on them on first of September 2017 in the morning.

It was also learnt that the deceased, who had two wives and 12 children, however, fell and was allegedly shot in the chest by one of the herdsmen.

Fulani herdsmen also raped and murder two women in Edo State

During the raid, two women were raped and killed in a community called Ewu in Edo Central, while four were raped in another community in Edo North Senatorial District of the state.

These revelations were contained in a motion, sponsored by Sen. Clifford Ordia, who represents Edo Central on the floor of the Senate, on Wednesday. The motion was tagged ‘Need to curtail the activities of Fulani Herdsmen in Edo State’.

Ordia’s claims were corroborated by Senator Francis Alimikhena, who represents Edo North Senatorial District.

Accordingly, the Senate has mandated security agencies “to halt, apprehend and bring to justice the criminal elements posing as herdsmen who derive pleasure in destroying lives and properties across Nigeria.”
